Well, we are now officially into September. The kids have gone back to school and many families are getting settled into their new schedules. It feels great to be in a routine and have some predictability, doesn't it? WAIT. NOT SO FAST. Just as soon as you are really getting comfortable I have a reminder for you- the holidays are coming! They won't wait for you and won't be bothered at all by your sleepless nights as you try to figure out how you are going to do it all! Many of us feel alone during this time and it can be very overwhelming.
I'm plenty old enough to have experienced this myself. I am also old enough to have caught onto the patterns of procrastination that enveloped me for years. I'm here to tell you something that you already know...but what are you doing different this fall? A little planning can go a long way. Here are some tips that I like to implement and am working on NOW.
1) Set up a schedule with deadlines. This may be for gathering recipes and ingredients for your prized dishes for Thanksgiving or for having coordinated outfits ready for your photo session. You may also want to spread out your gift buying so that your budget isn't blown in December! If you have company coming perhaps you can make a few things ahead of time and freeze them in advance.
2) Make some time for yourself. Take care of yourself. You can't be the super hero for your family if you are unhealthy and exhausted. Drink lots of water, get your exercise in and journal your thoughts if that is something you enjoy. Your spiritual growth is important too and shouldn't be dismissed. Make time to give thanks for the good in your life each day!
3) As you meet your deadlines (hopefully a little ahead of schedule) reward yourself with a nice cup of coffee or a special night out. Remember, it's all about making those memories with those you love. Don't forget to schedule a time for a photo shoot with all of you together. Now, go start planning! :)
